Ricky Hatton To Use New Tactics For Marquez Fight
Wednesday 25 November 2009
Former Light Welterweight World Champion Ricky Hatton has hired a new trainer ahead of next year’s fight with Mexican star Juan Manuel Marquez, stating that he intends to “up his game” against the highly rated fighter, as he is “way better than I am.”
Hatton was quick to dispel rumours of his retirement earlier in the year, following another high profile humiliation against a better boxer when he was knocked out in just two rounds by pound-for-pound King Manny Pacquiao back in May, and says that this time the better man will almost definitely lose.
“The plan is simple”, said Hatton, “I plan to hit him in the head continuously until I am finally recognised as one of the all-time greats. The problem I have to solve first is, how do I not get out manouvered, out thought, and out boxed before I can do that.”
Hatton’s new trainer, the actor Tony Burton, who helped transform boxing legend Rocky Balboa from a slugger into one of the greatest fictional champions of all time, recently claimed that on his day the ‘Hitman’ can beat any fighter in the world, which is why he has decided to take on another superior boxer.
“His losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao were to two of the greatest fighters of their generation, but they were just better than Ricky on the day" said Burton. "What we are hoping for this time is that we get lucky and it’ll be his day. 1 in 365 aren’t bad odds when you consider how much better Marquez actually is.”
Ricky, who was attending a book signing in central London today arrived dressed in a fat suit; a sly nod to all of the critics that have said his constant ballooning in weight between fights is taking its toll on his body. Mugging to the crowd amid chants of, ‘There’s only one, Ricky Fatton’, Ricky was momentarily taken aback when one passionate fan shouted out, “If you’re not going to take being a professional boxer seriously then maybe you should quit before you get seriously hurt”, but Ricky laughed off the quip, saying later that he respected the man’s opinion, but felt confident that this time he would be able to implement a carefully planned out strategy in the ring that would be enough to overcome Marquez and reclaim some respect in the world of boxing.
“I’m not just going to charge at him like a child and try and bully a skillfull boxer into submission, that would be stupid”, said Hatton. “I lost my cool in the Mayweather fight and look what happened, then the same thing happened when I fought Pacquiao. The odds that exactly the same thing will happen again are so astronomical I'm sure they cannot be calculated.”
Bookmakers however, do not agree, and have given odds of 1-1000 that Hatton will continue to repeat his mistake, with some bookies even taking pity on those that still believe Hatton can pound Marquez into submission by handing out free tins of dog food to punters printed with labels that read; ‘lovely human food’.
